Dal chakolya / varan phal

Easy to make, tasty, nutritious and one dish meal "Maharashtrial  recipe".


Ingredients:

For Chakolya/ Phal:
Wheat flour 2 cups
Salt 1/2 tsp
Oil 1tsp
Water

For dal/ varan:
Toor dal 1 cup
Mustard seeds 1tsp
Cumin seeds 1tsp
Asafetida 1/4tsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Chili powder 2tsp
Goda masala 1tsp
Curry leaves 5-6
Garlic cloves 4-5
Kokum 2 or tamarind pulp 2tsp (optional)
Sugar or jaggery 1 Tbsp (optional)
Coconut grated 1Tbsp
Salt to taste
Coriander
pure ghee (sajuk tup) for serving

Method:
Wash toor dal thoroughly, add water, asafetida, turmeric powder and pressure cook untill it gets tender.
Till dal gets ready, make dough for chakolya.
Mix wheat flour salt and oil, add water and knead to a medium consistency dough.( same as we knead to make roti)
Heat a deep pan( kadhai).  Add oil, once oil get hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, turmeric powder, red chili powder, curry leaves, saute all ingredients for seconds.
Now add nicely cooked dal in pan and add some water make little thin consistency as we are going to add dough pieces (chakolya/ phal) into dal which inturns thicken the dal
Add goda masala, salt (optional jaggery and kokam or tamarind pulp) and keep dal over medium heat to boil.
Meanwhile divide the dough into 3 to 4 equal portions, roll roti from dough ball and cut into small 1inch pieces.
Add all pieces to boilling dal and let it cook for 10 minutes.That’s  it, chakolya  are ready to serve. Serve with ghee on the top of it and some chopped coriander.
